Naming Dogs After Food

After recently bringing Nugget and Donut into the regular roster, it occurred to me that several of my dogs are named after food. So, I decided to inquire further about the origin and inspiration behind each of their names. With that, I hope you enjoy this feature of Dog-E-Dog's Foodies:

NUGGET
When we got Nugget, she was 8 weeks old and only 8lbs or so. My wife thought she looked like a little gold nugget and I thought her tail looked like a chicken nugget...so the name stuck.

DONUT

I'm not sure why we're so obsessed with food names for our dogs (Donut & Sashimi). We actually had a beautiful little corgi mix named pretzel as well (she was tragically hit and killed by a car last year). I think it has something to do with their extreme cuteness: so adorable you just want to eat them up!

EGGS
When we went to get eggs from the breeder he was curled up in a little ball in the corner of his crate and looked like an egg. Since it was Easter season, we toyed with the idea of keeping the name. What solidified It was a 7 year old girl we met on the street who thought the name "Eggs" was genius.

FUDGE

Actually, Fudge came with the name Fudge - presumably because of her coloring.  We fully intended to change her name when we got her.  We had a whole list of other names and kept trying them on her.  But after a day or two, we realized that it was no use fighting - she's just Fudge!  It suits her in a funny way, so we kept it.  :)

BACON
I just really liked food names for dogs like hambone, pickle, porkchop and honestly it was probably more because I wanted a small dog that I could call Baconator.

GRAVY
We adopted Gravy from a rescue.  She came to us with the name Baby, which neither of us could abide by due to it's extreme anthropomorphism, so we were very happy when she responded to the name Gravy enthusiastically as it matched both her coloring and her intense obsession with anything meaty and delicious.

HONORARY MENTIONS {not quite foods, but food related}:

SMOKEY
Actually Smokey was a rescue and he came with the name. It seemed fitting because I'm a firefighter, plus smokey scotch and smoked salmon are mild obsessions of mine.

MARLO
Marlo is named after the restaurant Marlow & Sons where we were eating the night we decided to get him. We have since found out that “malo” means “bad” in Spanish and people are always surprised as he is such a well behaved dog, well at least most of the time…. when he isn’t around food.
